ZukoWa: new project approved in April 2025!

The aim of this project is to develop adaptation strategies for small municipal water suppliers in areas with fissured aquifers, based on the example of five municipalities in the Black Forest, in response to changing precipitation patterns caused by climate change, which have an impact on spring discharges.

MiWaEduNet Webinar Series: Monitoring strategies of microbial groundwater processes 31.07.2025, 14:30 -15:30, online

Objective of the Webinar:

The webinar will give an overview on micro- and molecular biological monitoring strategies used in practise to investigate microbial processes in groundwater. The methods relevant to monitor microbial heavy metal immobilisation in groundwater will be explained.

MiWaEduNet Webinar Series: Man made soils: The Technosol 26.06.2025, 14:30 -15:30, online

Objective of the Webinar:

The lecture will explain how soils develop from man made products or from man made relocated substrates. These soils show different properties to naturally formed soils and can be intensively polluted. Those soils can be found in urban systems but as well in combination with mining activities. For a sustainable development of our environment they need special treatments and management.

MiWaEduNet Webinar Series: Hydrogeology of mine residue deposits 27.03.2025, 14:30 -15:30, online

Objective of the Webinar: An introduction to the conceptual understanding of different Mine Residue Deposits (tailings dams, discard and waste rock dumps, backfilled opencast mines) and its impacts on the water balance and geochemistry.

Suitcase and backpack for a better consciousness of SOIL

There is still too little awareness of soil as a resource in society. For schools and extracurricular places of learning, it must be noted that they can hardly fulfill the educational aim of "creating soil awareness". On the one hand, the teachers (for geography, natural sciences, biology) themselves are insufficiently trained in soil science topics. On the other hand, they usually don’t have enough time to teach selected topics. The idea of the project is to develop a prototype equipped with materials for a soil suitcase (SOIL-aware, in German: BODENbewusst) and a backpack (in terrain/direct contact with soil – SOIL-contact, in German: BODENkontakt). The materials are intended to encourage children (elementary school) and young people (secondary school) to explore soils in their natural environment through direct contact on site. In the future, the suitcase and backpack will be used by trained soil ambassadors in schools and extracurricular facilities in Brandenburg.
