Bachelor Kurse

Master Kurse

Students will acquire in-depth knowledge of the methods used to study sedimentary successions and the role of subsidence, sea level, sediment production, and climate in the formation of basin-fill stratigraphy. Through the analysis of selected intervals in Earth history, this module examines the feedbacks among various components in the Earth system, emphasizing in particular the interactions among the biosphere, the lithosphere, and the climate system. During weekly labs and a field trip, students will gain practical skills in applying the principles of basin analysis and the processes that control sedimentary history.

  • Modern Carbonate Environments (Maria Mutti, Sara Tomas, Jens Kallmeyer)

This course will provide an overview of the major concepts and actualistic and non-actualistic models underlying carbonate geology, and will focus on carbonate deposition through geologic time, emphasizing feedbacks in the Earth system. Students will learn about the latest approaches to the study of carbonate systems in Earth system research through (1) a seminar in which each student will present a self-researched topic from selected case studies from various intervals in Earth History and (2) a field trip to the Red Sea (Egypt) where we will demonstrate concepts and applications both on land and under water and will compare modern and fossil record.

  • MGEW07 Geologische 3D Modellierung - Geological 3D modelling (Gerd Winterleitner, Thomas van der Looven, Maria Mutti)

The objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of numerical modeling of sedimentary systems. Theoretical concepts will be discussed using real-world applications from oil and gas exploration and production, carbon capture and storage, and geothermal exploration. Students will engage with a variety of geologic datasets to create their own 3D numerical models. Static and dynamic 3D models will be developed by integrating multi-scale geologic datasets using geostatistical concepts.

  • Geländeübung B – Field School B (Dolomites) (Maria Mutti, Sara Tomas)

Students will acquire in-depth knowledge of the methods used to study sedimentary successions and the role of subsidence, sea level, sediment production, and climate in the formation of basin-fill stratigraphy. Through the analysis of selected intervals in Earth History, this course examines the feedbacks among various components in the Earth system, emphasizing in particular the interactions among the biosphere, the lithosphere, and the climate system.  This practical excursion to the Dolomites will help to gain practical skills in applying the principles of basin analysis and the processes that control sedimentary history, investigating strata deposited across the Permo-Triassic mass extinction and recording the aftermath of this catastrophic event and the resulting feedbacks in the Earth system.

  • Methods and applications in basin analysis (fka. Petroleum Geology) (Maria Mutti, Robert Ondrak, Gerd Winterleitner, Thomas Van der Looven)
  • MGEW08 Vertiefte Probleme in der Beckenanalyse (Maria Mutti)
