Cancellation and Expiration of Degree Programs

Consequences of Cancellation

The cancellation of a degree program results in, first of all, no new students being enrolled into this program, either in the first semester or in later semesters. In addition, the cancellation also results in the course offerings and examinations for this degree being maintained for only a short time and the study and examination regulations being discontinued at the end of a transitional period.

The transitional period includes the standard time for completing the canceled degree program or subject of study in addition to a further ten semesters from the time of cancellation. Exceeding this time limit results in the expiration of the right to examination for concerned students not later than this point in time, if they were not already affected by the examination deadline regulation in accordance with Section 7a BAMA-O/BAMALA-O.

Students in canceled degree programs are also subject to the regulations of the examination deadline. Provisions onexamination deadline regulations according to Section 7a BAMA-O/BAMALA-O are thereby applied. This means that the individual right to examination can already expire before the above mentioned examination deadline has been reached.

Alternatives and Changing to a different Degree Program

Should you be unable to complete your degree program by the date of the final option for examination, this does not necessarily mean that you must leave university without any degree.

It is always possible to change to a different degree program. Depending upon your previously achieved credentials and the contents of the new degree program, you can have some of these credentials recognized by the Examination Board towards the new degree program and, in addition, even be placed in a higher semester.  An application for a restricted admission degree program for the placement semester must nonetheless take place before the respective application deadline. Only after receiving an approval notification can you transfer to the new degree program. In the case of open admission degree programs, enrollment in the first semester must take place before the respective enrollment deadline. You can also seek advice at the Central Student Advisory Service on the application procedure or changing disciplines.

You can also visit the Central Student Advisory Service if you have decided against switching to a new degree program and are perhaps considering alternative educational possibilities.
