Potsdam’s Time Frame Model

Conditions and Organization of your Studies in Combined Programs of Study at the University of Potsdam

Students in Combined Programs of Study must coordinate courses, exams, etc. from three to five disciplines or departments with one another. The University of Potsdam supports this coordination with an overarching course plan that involves all disciplines. Due to the multitude of possible combinations this is absolutely necessary to avoid conflicts in your course schedule and to enable you to complete your studies within the standard course length.

Potsdam’s Time Frame Model

At the University of Potsdam, we have created four disciplinary groups based on the matriculation frequency of all possible disciplinary combinations. Within each disciplinary group we have combined all the areas of study that were only rarely combined in the previous matriculation terms. Thus it can be assumed that course offerings will not overlap because the disciplines selected by the student will likely belong to two different disciplinary groups.

In the planning of courses, each Disciplinary Group has been assigned three periods within an academic year during which courses that appear only once per semester will be offered. These are the so-called Alternate-less Course Offerings. For the planning of courses that do have an alternate (Parallel Course Offering), these terms do not apply. This will assure that students can attend alternate-less courses and avoid course schedule conflicts.

Note for students already at the University of Potsdam: Disciplines that currently do not allow matriculation, for example Art, Criminal Justice, and Civil Law, are not listed here since the information here is for prospective students and could lead to misunderstandings.

Note for Prospective Students

Currently, the University of Potsdam is able to achieve a conflict-free schedule of classes for about 85% of all students with the “Time Frame Model.” If there are other matriculation frequencies for discipline combinations in coming years, then there will be a reorganization of the Disciplinary Groups. However, prospective students who want to combine disciplines within a Disciplinary Group should be aware of constraints in registering for alternate-less courses.

A conflict-free schedule with alternate-less mandatory courses is usually just one of the various aspects in your decision-making process. You can go to the Central Academic Advising Office for advice on planning your overall plan of studies.
