Research Focus
Sedimentary Geology at the University of Potsdam
We study both surface and subsurface sedimentary systems, combining geology, biology, stratihraphy, oceanography, and climate science. Our research embraces two main, often overlapping themes:
Carbonate and Mixed Systems: Reconstructing Earth System History
We study how carbonate and mixed sedimentary systems have responded to climate change throughout Earth’s history. By calibrating modern carbonate and mixed environments, we aim to assess how major climate events such as the Paleocene/Eocene, Miocene and Cretaceous impacted the marine biosphere. This work helps connect ancient marine ecosystems and sedimentary deposits to broader Earth system processes, providing valuable insights into past, present, and future climate dynamics.
Reservoir Sedimentology and Basin Analysis- Eergy resources and subsurface Modelling
Our research applies sedimentary geology to subsurface energy and water resources. We:
- Conduct outcrop analogue studies at world-class field sites
- Analyze sedimentary heterogeneity and architecture
- Develop 3D visualizations and numerical models
- Perform petrophysical and diagenetic analyses
These approaches allow us to understand how depositional environments and post-depositional processes affect reservoir properties such as porosity and permeability—key factors for resource exploration, carbon storage, and groundwater flow.
Collaboration and Outreach
Sedimentary processes are global, and understanding them requires interdisciplinary and international collaboration. Our team partners with institutions worldwide and contributes to a broad research community. We actively welcome collaboration proposals and student applications from around the globe.View all members of our research group and our recent projects abnd publications.
