Germany has a comprehensive social insurance system. Social insurance, which is prescribed by law, consists of health insurance, retirement insurance, unemployment insurance, accident and long-term care insurance.

If you receive a scholarship, you are typically released from social insurance obligations, but you will nevertheless need health insurance that is valid in Germany for the entire duration of your stay. Employees can only be released from social insurance obligations if they are sent to Germany by an employer in their home country, and/or a social security agreement exists between both countries. You must have German health insurance to conclude an employment contract in Germany.
