Cycling is a central pillar of the University of Potsdam’s sustainable mobility strategy: it combines eco-friendly transportation with health benefits and helps alleviate traffic and parking congestion on campus. The University is actively committed to expanding bicycle-friendly infrastructure and offering a wide range of services to make cycling on campus and in the surrounding area attractive and convenient.

Health Benefits of Cycling

Cycling improves endurance, strengthens the cardiovascular system and joints, and helps reduce stress through the release of serotonin and endorphins. Commuting to campus by bike thus contributes significantly to the physical and mental health of the university community.

Environmental benefits of cycling

  • No direct greenhouse gas emissions while riding
  • Low environmental impact during bicycle manufacturing and maintenance
  • No air or noise pollution
  • Reduced land use compared to cars thanks to compact bike lanes and parking spaces

These factors make the bicycle a key mode of transportation on the path to a climate-neutral university.

Infrastructure and Services for Cyclists

The University of Potsdam has systematically expanded its cycling infrastructure:

  • Bike paths and connections: The bike path between the Neues Palais and Golm campuses has been extensively modernized, featuring smooth asphalt surfacing and a safe route away from motor vehicle traffic. The bike path along the railroad tracks to Urnenfeld has also been expanded. Currently (as of 2024), a new bike path is being built parallel to Kuhfortdamm, providing comfortable and safe connections free of car traffic.
  • Bike repair stations: Repair stations are located at central locations where university members can perform minor maintenance themselves - from pumping tires to changing a wheel.
  • Bike-sharing services: Thanks to a partnership with nextbike by TIER, students can use rental bikes for up to 45 minutes per day free of charge. Employees with a company pass benefit from up to two hours of free use per day. Additionally, employees have the option to borrow so-called “campus bikes” for commuting between campuses.

Getting Involved in CITY CYCLING – Riding Together for Climate Protection and Health

For years, the University of Potsdam has been one of the most active university groups in the nationwide CITY CYCLING event in Potsdam. In 2024, the university team covered an impressive 54,917 kilometers by bike, sending a strong message in support of sustainable mobility and the cohesion of the university community.

CITY CYCLING not only encourages people to switch to cycling but also promotes health and a sense of community. Employees can compete in internal teams and celebrate their successes together. Participation is easy via the CITY CYCLING app or website, where all rides are digitally recorded.

User Numbers and Trends

Bicycle use has increased significantly in recent years. Traffic counts conducted by the City of Potsdam show that bicycle use between campuses has more than doubled as a result of improved infrastructure and attractive initiatives.

Promotion and Participation

The University encourages all members of the university community to actively help shape bicycle mobility. Regular surveys and participatory formats facilitate open communication about experiences, needs, and innovative ideas.

Goals for Bicycle Mobility

  • Expansion of safe, accessible, and attractive bike paths
  • Integration of bicycles into the multimodal mobility mix
  • Support for repair and maintenance services
  • Increasing the share of bicycle traffic for trips to and on campus
