Specialized Fields

Christoph Königer, alumnus

„One aspect about the computer science program at the University of Potsdam that I especially appreciated was the openness between professors and students. I am very grateful for the good professional and personal supervision by the department's lecturers and employees throughout my studies there.“

Computerlinguistik

The bachelor's degree program in Computerlinguistik at the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Computer Science is focused on the development of technological systems for analyzing and processing human language, such as search engines and chat-bots. The program covers the basics of syntax, semantics, and morphology along with foundational knowledge of mathematics, logic, and computer sciences. Training in program languages plays an important role in the curriculum.

Informatik/Computational Science

The bachelor's program in Informatik/Computational Science is a computer science degree designed for mathematical and scientific applications. The degree program imparts a broad and integrated understanding of computer science and interdisciplinary knowledge of the intersections between computer science and the natural sciences.  You can select focus areas within computer science or in bioinformatics, computational chemistry, theoretical physics, geoinformatics, or neuroscience.  The Department of Computer Science offers this degree in conjunction with the science departments.

IT Systems Engineering

Unique in Germany, the bachelor's program in IT Systems Engineering is a practical and engineering-oriented computer science program at the Hasso Plattner Institute. The program imparts knowledge about designing, developing, and implementing complex IT systems and brings together developments in computer science, engineering experience, and business processes.

Stefanie Lemcke, alumna

„Some of the things I appreciate about the program here in Potsdam are the ability to pursue projects and internships outside the regular coursework and the many opportunities for jobs as a student worker or academic assistant. I was able to work on a project as an academic assistant, which not only furthered my professional development but also expanded my competencies in communication and team/project management.“

Wirtschaftsinformatik

The bachelor's program in Wirtschaftsinformatik at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences imparts knowledge about designing, developing, and implementing corporate information systems. The degree program provides broad-based foundational knowledge and introduces students to the basics of computer science and the applications of its methods and theories to companies and government authorities.

Informatik as a Teacher Training Subject

At the Department of Computer Science, you can study computer science as a subject in a teacher training degree program culminating in a Bachelor of Education. In Brandenburg, computer science is offered as a school subject not only as a minors or majors in the final phase of high school (Oberstufe), but also as an elective or required class in Secondary School I (Sekundarstufe I). At the University of Potsdam, future teachers in the Computer Science teacher training course learn comprehensive subject-matter and educational skills that enable them to pass on knowledge of computer science across disciplines and with regard to specific projects. Alongside the field of computer science, you must choose a complementary subject as part of your teacher training.

Requirements for Bachelor's Degree Programs

If you are interested in mathematical or scientific subjects, enjoy thinking logically, and are happy to devise solutions to tricky problems alone or in a team, you have already met the most important requirements. A solid foundation in mathematics is useful. You can fill in any knowledge gaps before starting the program by completing one the university's bridge courses. An important requirement for this in-depth program is good English skills. You do not need prior knowledge of computer science.

To pursue a bachelor's degree at the University of Potsdam, you must demonstrate a higher education entrance qualification. You can find more information about valid types of higher education entrance qualifications here.

Orientation for New Students

Students at the Department of Computer Science meet with mentors regularly in small groups. Especially at the beginning of the program, this helps students get acquainted with the university. In the MINT room at the Faculty of Science, tutors help students work on exercises and assignments.
