Inhalte
International bureaucracies, like for example the secretariat of the United Nations or treaty secretariats, have been neglected for a long time in theories and empirical studies in International Relations. Only recently, their role and influence has attracted scholarly attention. In this course, students will gain insights into the existing theoretical and empirical study of international bureaucracies. To this end, students will self-dependently seek answers to the guiding question of the course, namely whether, to what extent, how and under what conditions international bureaucracies influence world politics? Self-dependent means that students devise the procedure how answers to these questions are sought and what individual steps are needed to find answers (with more or less support and guidance by the instructor). In the remaining sessions, students will then implement this strategy (with more or less support and guidance by the instructor).
