Funding of the project "Digital Governance: Innovation through crisis".

As part of the “Small subjects: visibly innovative!” initiative of the German Higher Education Rectors’ Conference, a project run by Dr Caroline Fischer is being funded. The citizen science project addresses the sustainability of the current digital transformation trend in the public sector.

As a result of the coronavirus crisis, there has also been a growing focus on flexible working and other digital solutions in the public sector. The question arises as to whether the digitisation of public administration, which is currently being observed, is "just" a kind of digital emergency operation, or is the crisis really creating a functioning digital administration? So how sustainable will this change be: will routines be changed or will current innovations be eliminated after the crisis?

To find answers to these questions, the project works with a citizen science approach and wants to explore with administrative staff the changes brought about by the coronavirus crisis in relation to digitalisation. A one-day digital event with around 120 public administrators and scientests from the subject public administration and adjacent disciplines is planned for this purpose. A blog on administrative digitisation will be created at this event as a key communication tool. It documents the event and forms the basis for further exchange between academia and practitioners.
