Winter Semester 2023/24

New publication by Jan Fliessbach, Rodrigo Gutiérrez-Bravo and Melanie Uth in February: the article "On the incompatibility of object fronting and progressive aspect in Yucatec Maya"  was published in Frontiers in Language Sciences.

Neue Publikation von Wojciech Lewandowski und Ozcaliskan Seyda: Der Artikel "Translating motion events across physical and metaphorical spaces in structurally similar versus structurally different languages" wurde in der Zeitschrift  Metaphor & Symbol veröffentlicht.

As part of the "Forschungscolloquium Romanistische Sprachwissenschaft"Melanie Uth, Patrick Auhagen and Iñaki Cano will give a lecture on "Exploring the limits of variability in Spanish relative complementation - first results" at the FU Berlin on January 17 2024.

On Tuesday, January 16 2024, Prof. Dr. Marco García García from the University of Cologne will give a guest lecture on "Delimiting the variability of Differential Object Marking in Romance". The lecture will take place as part of the C09 project at 16:30 on the Golm campus, House 14, Room 0.32.

Patrick Auhagen will give a lecture on January 12 2024 on the topic "Locative relativizer usage in mono- and bilingual speakers of Yucatecan Spanish". It will take place via Zoom as part of a conference on "Bilingualism in the Hispanic and Lusophone World" at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, México.

As part of the Linguistic Lecture Series, Melanie Uth and Patrick Auhagen will give a lecture on "Grenzen der Variabilität bei spanischen Relativsatzkomplementierern" on Wednesday, December 13 2023. On Monday, November 27 2023, Patrick Auhagen will present a lecture on "Labeling and the dual function of the complementizer 'donde que' in Huari Spanish" at the "VII Encuentro sobre dialectos del español" as part of the subproject C09 (SFB 1287). More information is available at VII SpaDiSyn UCM.

On November 20 2023, the Red de Diversidad Lingüística en Colombia (ReDiLeC) will once again host a panel. The third event in this series will focus on linguistic and socio-cultural practices in the Colombian Caribbean. In October, María del Mar Vanrell from the Universitat de les Illes Balears and Melanie Uth published a new paper on language and tourism entitled "Multilingualism and tourism: insights from the Yucatan Peninsula and Majorca" in ENERGEIA. ONLINE JOURNAL FOR LINGUISTICS, LANGUAGE PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY OF LINGUISTICS.

We are delighted to announce that Jan Fliessbach, in collaboration with Lucia Tovena, Damien Fleury (both from U. Paris Cité, LLF) and Johanna Rockstroh (U. Bremen), has been awarded a Procope grant (DAAD, Campusfrance) for the years 2024 and 2025. The project is entitled "PaCoCo: Parallel Corpus Exploration of Interrogatives with French 'Comment'".

In October 2023, Wojciech Lewandowski and Seyda Ozcaliskan published the first results of his Heisenberg project in the journal Cognitive Linguistics: Running across the mind or across the park: does speech about physical and metaphorical motion go hand in hand?

As part of the "Lengua y Turismo" project, an excursion to Mallorca will start on October 16, in which some of the department's staff and students will take part.  Melanie Uth will give a lecture on "En procura de "lo maya" en las guías turísticas alemanas de la península de Yucatán" at the Universitat de les Illes Balears in Palma de Mallorca on October 20.

On September 27 2023, Jan Fliessbach will present his lecture on "Über ‚fehlende‘ Verben in französischen und spanischen wie-das(s)-Interrogativsätzen" at the "38. Romanistentag" in Leipzig. The lecture will take place from 14:45 to 15:30 in Section 3 "NULL in Morphologie und Syntax", organized by Peter Herbeck & Natascha Pomino. On Friday, August 25 2023, Patrick Auhagen will present a poster at the UMLV Summer School (Understanding and Modeling Linguistic Variability) as part of subproject C09. On Tuesday, August 8 2023, at 2:15 pm, Wojciech Lewandowski will present his paper Running across the mind or across the park: Does speech about physical and metaphorical motion go hand in hand? at the 16th International Cognitive Linguistics Conference.

This July, Jan Fliessbach and Johanna Rockstroh will present their work "On the interaction of wh-placement and situational verbs in French partial interrogatives" at the 18th International Pragmatics Conference in Brussels.

 

On July 04 2023 Patrick Auhagen will give a talk "On the role of antecedent accessibility in Spanish relativizer variation" as part of the Syntax-Semantics Colloquium. It will take place from 14:15-15:45 at the Golm campus, in room 14.0.09. All interested parties are cordially invited.

At the end of June, Melanie Uth will travel to Colombia to hold a bilateral course in collaboration with the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira and to establish collaborations with Colombian colleagues in Pereira and Manizales.

New release in June | A revised version of Jan Fliessbach's dissertation titled "The intonation of expectations: On marked declaratives, exclamatives, and discourse particles in Castilian Spanish" was published by Language Science Press as part of the Open Romance Linguistics series. Nina Reuther will be holding an interactive session on "Language as a mirror of looking at the (surrounding) world" in the seminar "Sprachliche Diversität und Typologie", bringing with her experiences and illustrative examples from her indigenous European background. The seminar will take place on June 19 2023 from 16-18 h (c.t.). All those who are interested are cordially invited,  please register in advance with Melanie Uth.

Andreas Hölzl will give a lecture on "Zeitkonzeption und -versprachlichung im Sprach- und Kulturvergleich" in the seminar Sprachliche Diversität und Typologie on June 12 2023 (from 16:15 to 17:45 in room 1.19.4.15). On June 7 2023, Wojciech Lewandowski will give his first lecture at the University of Potsdam on the topic "Spatial events in native and second language production contexts" in the context of the Linguistic Lecture Series by the Zentrum für Sprache, Variation und Mehrsprachigkeit. On June 5, 2023 from 16:00 to 18:00 the panel "Multilingüismo en Amazonia colombiana: lenguas, identidades y educación" will take place via Zoom. Further information and registration can be found here.

We are delighted to welcome the new Heisenberg Fellow Wojciech Lewandowski to our team from June 1 2023, who will spend five years at the University of Potsdam researching „Gesten im Blick: Wie Gesten das Sprachenlernen widerspiegeln und erleichtern“ at the University of Potsdam. As part of the guest lectures of the SVM (Zentrum für Sprache, Variation, Mehrsprachigkeit), Ana María Reyes-Vujovic will give a lecture on "Das Tikuna und der linguistische Kontakt zum Spanischen im Amazonas Gebiet Kolumbiens" on May 31, 2023. In March and April 2023 Jan Fliessbach will be a visiting scholar at the Université Paris Cité on the "Projet LABEX Empirical Foundations of Linguistics" with Lisa Brunetti and Evangelia Adamou in the research area "MarCo Axe 2 (Experimental grammar):  Marked constructions and information structure".

New publication in November: Article by Melanie Uth and Patrick Auhagen on Variation of Relative Complementizers in Yucatecan Spanish: A Comparison of Monolingual and Bilingual Speakers in Languages.

Our project Limits of variability in Spanish relative complementation was approved by the DFG, German Research Foundation! For about 3 years, Patrick Auhagen, Iñaki Cano and PI Melanie Uth, together with six international cooperation partners,  will research the limits of variability in Spanish relative clauses within the framework of CRC 1287, Limits of variability in language.

Friday, September 23 2022: « Les mots populaires » zwischen Wörterbuch und Sprachkorpus. Presentation by Melanie Uth and Sascha Diversy at the 13. Kongress des Frankoromanistenverbands, University of Vienna.

24.08.2022: A press report on Mallorca-Potsdam teaching cooperation by Melanie Uth and Iñaki Cano with the University of the Balearic Islands was published in "Neues aus der UP" (in German).

New publication in August: Article by Melanie Uth on Labialization of word-final nasals in Yucatecan Spanish: Language contact, local identity, and prosodic prominence marking in Journal of Language Contact.
