05/2026 Thaiane Maciel

Nationality: Brazilian

Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us where you’re from? What are you studying, and where did you study before coming to Potsdam?

I’m Thaiane Maciel, Brazilian Environmental Engineer, Actress since the age of 3 and climate activist. Founder and director of Instituto Ecocria - Canal Novo Mundo, that mobilizes youth and communities toward environmental action using communication and education as a tool. Coordinated the removal of more than 160 tons of waste from public spaces and more than 500 actions. Speaker at COP30. International Climate Protection Fellow at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Environmental consultant, was recognized as UNESCO Green Citizen, and The Climate Reality Project's 2024 Climate Personality. Currently pursuing my Master’s degree Climate, Earth, Water, and Sustainability at the University of Potsdam. I graduated in Environmental Engineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and also Performing Arts at the Faculdade CAL de Artes Cenicas, both in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

What inspired you to study Climate, Earth, Water, and Sustainability? And What aspects of your program excite you the most right now?

I’ve always been passionate about our planet. When deciding how to channel my energy alongside acting, I had no doubts: it had to be nature and finding ways to protect it. The CLEWS program offers the incredible opportunity to learn from world-renowned scientists such as Prof. Dr. Ricarda Winkelmann, - an incredible example of a woman in science -, Stefan Rahmstorf, Bernhard Diekmann, and Johan Rockström. Being in Potsdam puts us at the heart of global climate research. We are strategically close to prestigious German institutions like the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), and the Max Planck Institute. Having the chance to connect with these hubs and study at the historic Telegrafenberg can be incredibly motivating. Studying abroad has been a lifelong dream of mine—not only to advance my scientific knowledge but to master English and learn German. I’m also particularly excited about the upcoming excursion to the Alps; it’s an experience I never imagined I’d have the chance to do!

You’re very engaged in environmental protection both on social media back home: what motivates you here in Potsdam and at the university, and what opportunities have you found to get involved locally?

I am thrilled to be part of the teaching group for the newly launched Master’s discipline, “Plastics in the Environment.”, alongside Prof Dr Sascha Oswald. Also seeing the engagement of the students and their genuine drive to change the world is incredibly inspiring. Whether it is through small individual actions—like adjusting diets and reducing meat consumption—or larger collective efforts, every step counts. However, I believe that when we work together, we can achieve much more, especially regarding public policy. I would be happy to connect with more students here to brainstorm and launch environmental projects together!

What are your plans for activities in Potsdam and Berlin now that the weather is getting warmer?

I plan to spend as much time as possible in nature! Looking forward to cycling through the parks, attending sustainable festivals, and, of course, heading to the lakes for a swim.

What advice would you give your “first-week-in-Potsdam” self?

Stay open and stay curious! There are so many options at the university to explore—ranging from German language classes, singing groups, and sports to specialized research groups. Don't be afraid to dive in.

What are your plans for the future? Where do you see yourself after graduation?

I love working directly with people and communities. Whether as a policymaker, artist, communicator, or scientist, my focus will always be on taking action for the betterment of society. I believe all of us can make a difference—within our neighborhoods, our cities, or even our own families. Moving forward, I want to continue bridging the gap between Communication and Climate Science, ensuring we amplify the voices of women and youth from Brazil and the Global South.
