(Auto)biography - Narrating the Past in Contemporary Nonfiction Literature on 20th Century Central Europe

Dr. Aleksandra Konarzewska

In Potsdam I am investigating the special case of nonfiction literature that is a biography (a literary portrait) and an autobiography. Narrating the lives of public figures (especially those whose lives encompassed the most dramatic events of the 20thcentury) provides fertile ground for creating a pars pro totofigure that would act as a prism to elucidate the course of the newest history. My starting point is a fact that a biography is a genre that requires the consideration of up-to-date paradigms and methodologies, which is especially visible in the biographies of people who belonged to ethnical, national, religious or sexual minorities.
