Tallinn – Erasmus+ Job Shadowing Experience
At the end of April this year, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to participate in a job-shadowing visit in the International School of Tallinn, Estonia, through the auspices of Erasmus+. During my stay, I observed lessons across a wide range of age groups, from kindergarten through to Grade 10, and across a similarly wide variety of subjects. A focus of my observations were obviously classes taught in English, but I also observed classes in entrepreneurship, the Estonian language, art, and information technology.
Estonia is widely recognised as a global leader in education, particularly in its innovative use of digital technologies. The school provided a fascinating insight into how technology can support learning while maintaining a balanced classroom environment. Interestingly, despite its reputation for digital innovation, the school had implemented a mobile phone ban, which encouraged greater student engagement and interaction.
A particularly valuable aspect of the visit was the opportunity to speak with teachers, school leaders, fellow Erasmus+ participants about the practice of school teaching. These conversations provided deeper insights into classroom practice, educational leadership, and everyday school life in Estonia. I was also able to exchange ideas with colleagues, offer feedback on lessons and discuss different teaching approaches.
Meeting pupils from a variety of cultural backgrounds and hearing about their educational experiences was equally enriching. The visit provided many practical ideas and fresh perspectives that I look forward to incorporating into my own teaching and sharing with primary teacher trainees. Overall, it was a highly rewarding professional development experience that broadened my understanding of international education and strengthened my commitment to learning from other cultures.
