Virtual Exchanges in English Language Education - A Design-Based Research Study
Virtual Exchange (VE) is a learning practice based on the networking and collaboration of linguistically and culturally diverse groups of learners across geographical distances. This is made possible through the use of synchronous and asynchronous digital communication technologies. VEs are facilitated by teachers, who, among other things, support the joint preparation and follow-up of cross-cultural interaction, and are integrated into existing curricula wherever possible.
VE projects offer a wide range of opportunities for the English language classroom. Digital tools enable students to communicate with people from different countries and gain cultural insights, which promotes equality of opportunity and boosts motivation. In terms of subject matter, such exchange projects provide an ideal opportunity to explore issues relating to global learning and education for sustainable development.
Our Design-Based Research (DBR) project aims to investigate the implementation of virtual exchange projects in the school context. Together with teachers, we develop and implement project ideas, investigate the impact on the development of subject-specific, linguistic, digital and cultural competences, and, on this basis, develop tried-and-tested materials for English lessons. To this end, we capture the perspectives of both the teachers and the participating learners and observe lessons in a participatory manner in order to identify necessary improvements.
