University of Potsdam Ranks First in Germany! - Top Results in the THE Ranking of Young Universities

After a successful debut last year in the Times High er Education (THE) rankings, Brandenburg’s largest academic institution has now taken the top spot in the THE’s U 50 ranking for universities under 50 years of age. The University of Potsdam shot right away to the top 20 universities among 250 ranked institutions from 55 countries, and took first place in Germany ahead of the universities in Duisburg-Essen and Passau. The University of Potsdam is at 17th place internationally, which places it on par with such renowned universities as Hong KongPolytechnic, UT Sydney and the Université Paris-Sud.

Like the international rankings, the THE rankings for young universities focus on five criteria: teaching, research, citations, knowledge transfer and international reputation. “This outstanding result, after just 27 years of existence, confirms that we are on the right path,” said the President of the University of Potsdam. “First place among all German universities under 50; who would have thought that was  possible just a couple of years ago? I would like to thank everyone inside and outside of the University who have made this success possible!” said Prof. Oliver Günther, Ph.D. “Our broad array of international cooperative agreements and partnerships also played an important role in our successful placement in our first THE ranking,” said Prof. Dr. Florian J. Schweigert, Vice President for International Affairs, Alumni and Fundraising.

The THE Rankings are among the world’s most important university rankings, and only outstanding universities appear in them. The Young University Ranking compares data such from the fields of research, teaching and transfer, as well as internationalization and reputation. Part of the data is delivered by participating universities themselves, while THE assesses research performance by evaluatingpublications by means of special databases. Additional data is collected by a THE survey of scholars and scientists, particularly in the English-speaking world.
