FAQ for starting your master thesis
Aim of the master thesis
- The Master's thesis is the final piece of work in the program. It is usually written in the last semester of the program. A thesis already completed elsewhere cannot be recognised as a Master's thesis in CLEWS.
- The Master's thesis is intended to demonstrate that the candidate has, during the course of study and building on the first professional qualification, acquired extended and in-depth specialist knowledge, that the student able to combine theory and empirical research, and that the student is able to work on a more research-oriented or more application-oriented problem using subject-specific methods within a specified period of time and to present the results in a formally, linguistically and factually convincing manner.
- The Master's thesis, including the disputation, is worth 30 credits.
CLEWS Master Thesis Topics
As an interdisciplinary program, CLEWS offers a wide range of courses, not only in the natural sciences, but also in areas such as Climate Communication, Environmental Economics, and Climate Policy. This diversity is an important part of what makes the program special.
However, CLEWS is a Master of Science degree within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Therefore, the primary focus of a master’s thesis should lie in environmental and climate science research, with a strong quantitative, natural science perspective. This ensures that the scientific profile of the program is maintained, while the overall curriculum itself remains interdisciplinary. If you are unsure whether your planned topic is a good fit for CLEWS, I strongly recommend checking in with me early on. It’s always easier to clarify things in advance. In the end, each thesis topic needs to be formally approved by the examination board.
How do I find a topic for my Master's thesis?
I) Ask directly your favourite CLEWS teacher: Identify a field/topic you are interested in and use the great opportunity to directly ask CLEWS teachers if there is a possibility to do the Master's thesis in their group/project.
II) CLEWS list of topics for the Master's thesis: Have a look at the regularly updated online list of potential CLEWS thesis topics.
III) Find your own supervisor: You have found a topic elsewhere that suits CLEWS and you are looking for a second supervisor from our CLEWS programme to assess this topic.
Choosing two supervisors
- The topic of the Master's thesis is assigned by an examiner appointed by the examination board. The candidate has the right to nominate the examiner.
- The Master's thesis must be examined and assessed by two examiners from the field to which the thesis relates. Both examiners must work in the field in which you are writing your Master's thesis in order to be able to assess you..
- One of the examiners (usually the first) must be a professor at the University of Potsdam, actively teaching and entitled to examine. A junior professorship (or PD = "Privatdozent") is also acceptable.
- The second supervisor can also be from an external institution/university/company. This supervisor must (at least) have a higher degree than you. This means at least a completed Master of Science (or Diploma). This person does not have to teach.
Tip: Choose a topic and a supervisor that you feel comfortable with. You will usually discuss the various steps of your thesis with your supervisor over several months.
Two CLEWS modules support your graduation
I) PHY-CM03 Debating club (student seminars)
Content: Students will undertake guided self-study in the intended subject area of the Master's thesis. Students will prepare recent academic articles and present and critically discuss the content within the course.
II) PHY-S01 Introductory Research Project
Content: Students undertake a small introductory research project. The topic is usually the same as that of the Master's thesis. As part of this project, the student will attend the research group's specialist seminar. Module examination: Final report, 20 pages.

- The processing time for the Master's thesis begins with the registration of the topic with the study office. The processing time is six months.
- The thesis can be submitted at the earliest after one third of the processing time.
Selection of Elective Modules for Your Final Grade
If you have completed more than the required 9 elective modules (totaling more than 54 credit points), you can select which elective modules should count toward your final grade. Your average grade is calculated based on your mandatory modules, your final thesis, and the first 9 elective modules. By selecting elective modules, you can choose to replace a lower grade with a higher one from an additional completed module.
Please note that this selection can only be made once and is binding. You can find the relevant document “Selection of elective modules for your final grade” under the following link . Although the document provides space for only seven modules, you must still fill in nine modules. You have to submit this document before the submission of your final thesis.
Formal requirements for submission
- The Master's thesis must be written in English.
- As a rule, the length of the thesis should not exceed 3 DIN A4 pages per credit point (= 90 pages maximum). The CLEWS master’s thesis must not exceed 90 pages, including all content necessary to understand the work. This length should be sufficient to address the topic in full. There is no minimum page requirement. A separate supplementary annex may be included for additional material such as extra graphs, code, tables, and similar content. This annex is considered supplementary information and will be presented separately. However, the thesis will be evaluated solely on the content of the main 90 pages, without reference to the annex.
- Those passages of the thesis which are taken verbatim or in spirit from external works must be acknowledged.
- Although your thesis must be written in English, you need to include a German summary! This is an official requirement of our university.
- You must include a Statement of Originality with your final thesis. In this declaration of academic integrity, you declare that you have written the thesis yourself and that you have not used any sources or aids other than those specified. For more information, please refer to the Senate's guidelines on plagiarism. When uploading your thesis in PULS, the included Statement of Originality does not necessarily have to be signed. Example for this statement: “I hereby declare that this thesis is the product of my own work. All the assistance received in preparing this thesis and the sources used have been acknowledged.”
- You submit your dissertation to the Student Administration Centre / Examinations Office in digital form only, using the Document Upload option in PULS. When uploading your dissertation in PULS, please check carefully that you have selected the correct version for submission. The Examination Office will forward the first document you submit to your examiners. An updated version of your dissertation that you submit later will not be forwarded to your examiners.
Missed/late submission
- If the candidate culpably misses the submission deadline, the assignment will be marked 'insufficient' (5.0). In the case of a missed deadline due to illness, an extension will be granted for the duration of the illness.
- If there is another good reason for missing the deadline, the Chair of the Board of Examiners may, after consultation with the supervisor, grant a reasonable extension of time, normally up to one month. The valid reason for the extension must be notified to the Examiner in writing immediately after it arises and must be made credible.
What options are there for extending the processing time for the thesis?
In the event of illness, the submission deadline can be extended by the period of sick leave. Please check online (link) to find out how to submit a detailed medical certificate confirming your inability to take the exam on time and what is required.
Please upload the medical certificate, together with the attachment to the certificate, to PULS by the deadline. As soon as your sick note has been taken into account, you will be informed of the new latest submission deadline by the Office of Student Affairs/Examinations Office.
In cases of delay that are not due to illness and for which you are not responsible, your examination board may, upon request, agree to an extension of the processing time in accordance with BAMA-O § 26 (7) and § 30 (7) / BAMALA-O § 26 (7) and § 30 (9). The application must be submitted before the end of the processing time. If your application is approved, please upload an informal letter from your examination board confirming the extension and stating the specific period of the extension (usually 1 month) to PULS for the Office of Student Affairs / Examinations Office immediately upon receipt. You will be informed of the new latest submission deadline by the Office of Student Affairs/Examinations Office. The new submission deadline will also be noted on your transcript of records.
Grading procedure of your master thesis
- The Master's thesis must be assessed and marked by both examiners within six weeks.
- The examiners evaluate the work in writing and give reasons for their grades. The final grade of the thesis is the arithmetic mean of the grades.
- If the difference in marks is more than 2.0, or if one of the marks is lower than "adequate", a third examiner will be appointed by the board.
- If two of the three examiners assess the thesis as "insufficient" (5.0), the final grade of the thesis is "insufficient" (5.0). A Master's thesis graded "not sufficient" (5.0) may only be repeated once.

Defense organization
Defense procedure
1) Arragen a date for your defense
- Normally, once your Maste thesis has been assessed (with at least a 4.0 from both assessors), it's your responsibility to arrange a date for your defense with your supervisors. So arrange a date, time and room for your defense at one of the three university campuses.
2) Registrating your defense:
- Fill out the CLEWS defense registration form (see above). Boths supervisor needs to sign it. Email it to Andreas Kubatzki as a PDF at least 10 days before the scheduled defense date.
- Attach your actual PULS transcript of records.
- The disputation is open to the public; the public may be excluded at the student's request.
3) Your defense:
- The Board of Examiners consists of two examiners, who are usually your supervisors. A third assessor can be organised voluntarily.
- It is recommended that you check the room in advance. If you need help setting up the Zoom system, you can ask our technicians in advance for assistance - either Daniel Bazant or Martin Schüttig .
- Your defense should take exactly 20 minutes in total. It must start on time. You will then have 30 minutes for questions, first from your supervisors and then from the audience.
- Your defense accounts for 25% of your mark, while the written part of your Master's thesis accounts for the remaining 75%. Your defense may be repeated once in the case of a grade of "unsatisfactory" (5,0).
- Your supervisor needs to fill out the CLEWS defense protocol (see above) and send it to the examination office directly after your defense (email: pruefungsamt@uni-potsdam.de). The examination office will then enter your grade.
Tip: Invite your friends and family to your defense. It's a great way to give them a glimpse into your professional life and celebrate your graduation.
Optional 3rd supervisor for your thesis defense
A third examiner can be arranged as an option. The two supervisors of your Master's thesis are sufficient for the CLEWS defense. However, if you or your supervisors wish to organise a third assessor, this person can attend to do the protocol of the defense and ensure that everything is done correctly. The third assessor should not grade your defense and should have a higher academic degree than the student.
Booking a room for your thesis defense
As part of the organization of your thesis defense, you are responsible for reserving a suitable room. Ideally, you will be able to book an available room on any campus of the University of Potsdam, with Golm being the preferred choice.
We recommend room 0.25/0.26 in building 29 at Campus Golm due to its modern facilities, equipped with 30 seats and suitable audio-visual equipment. You can book the room directly by contacting UP Transfer Services. You can reserve the room by email: haus29@potsdam-transfer.de or by phone: +49 331 977 - 6171.
If room 0.25/0.26 is not available or you would like to reserve another room at the University of Potsdam, the easiest way is to fill out this form of the "Zentrale Raumvergabe" (Central Room Reservation Office). You can also contact them by email: raumvergabeuuni-potsdampde or by phone: +49 331 977 - 1568.
On the day of your defense, you should allow sufficient time for the room to be set up before the start of your defense. It is advisable to arrange the room setup - including tables, chairs, and the projector - at least 30 minutes before the start of your defense. Additionally, plan to remain in the room for about 30 minutes after the defense to manage any necessary follow-up activities. Therefore, it is advisable to book the room for a duration of at least two hours.
Support for hybrid defense
If you would like to give your presentation in hybrid form, you can request assistance from our technicians in advance to help you set up the system. Contact either Martin Schüttig OR Daniel Bazant.
