FAQ Application

In accordance with discipline-specific admission regulation you need to have a first higher education degree qualifying for a profession

• in a geoscientific subject/degree program amounting to 180 credit points with a standard period of study of at least three years and
• a proportion of at least 36 credit points (CP) overall in the subjects Geosciences, Earth Sciences, Mineralogy, Geology, or Geophysics as well 
•  as a total of 36 CP from courses in the fields of Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics with at least 6 CP for each of the latter three fields.

Application is processed by the PULS Application Portal. Any documents not submitted there will not be considered. Also we cannot afford preliminary evaluations of application documents or transcript of records.

The application period begins on April 1st for students starting in the winter semester. Please note the Application Deadlines.

The Master's program Geosciences is open admission. This means that you will receive a letter of admission as soon as your application documents have been reviewed by the Department of Student Affairs and the Examination Board and it has been determined that you meet all admission requirements.

Knowledge of German must be demonstrated to an extent corresponding to at least level A2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages. You can find more detailed information on the form in which the language skills must be proven on the pages of the Division of Student Affairs.

There is no tuition fee for the study program Geosciences. However, students have to pay a regular administrative term fee (Semestergebühren) which includes the Deutschlandsemesterticket for all public transportion in Germany. More details on the composition of those fees can be found here.

Newly enrolled students will receive their account in PULS (the University of Potsdam’s online platform for study affairs) along with their student ID. There are certain deadlines for course registration and for de-registration usually around mid of November.
