Information on the internal award procedure

As a matter of principle, we allocate chair-specific thesis topics at fixed application periods and allocation criteria in order to ensure a fair and comprehensible allocation of supervision places and adequate academic supervision.

Unfortunately, the number of applications often exceeds the available supervision capacity, so that additional theses or own topic suggestions cannot be supervised.

We take the following aspects into account when allocating theses:

  • previous academic achievements
  • Cases of hardship

In exceptional cases, we deviate from our allocation guidelines when allocating thesis places. This is the case if you

  • have a great enthusiasm for a specific topic related to the chair. In this case, please include a comprehensive letter of motivation with your application in which you credibly explain your interest in the topic and show that you have already familiarised yourself with the relevant specialist literature.
  • are interested in empirical work and have access to companies or organisations in order to be able to carry out empirical studies there. If this is the case, please indicate this in your application documents.

Information about the current status of your application

You will normally receive feedback on your application at the beginning of the semester, i.e. shortly after the end of the application deadline. In the meantime, please refrain from asking questions about the processing status. If you still have legitimate questions about your application, you are welcome to contact the chair's office. If you have withdrawn your application in the meantime, please let us know immediately. This is the only way we will be able to offer other applicants a place on the programme as quickly as possible.

Next steps after confirmation of a place

You will promptly receive an invitation to an initial consultation and/or information about the next steps by e-mail. During the initial consultation, we will inform you about the next steps. In the following weeks, you and your supervisor will agree on the specific topic of your thesis and then generate the topic allocation form for the thesis from PULS. Please sign this and send it by email to the secretary's office or your supervisor.

The topic assignment form will be sent back to you after the reviewers have signed it. You then upload it to the Moodle course ‘Theses’ together with your PULS transcript of records. The examination board will ensure that it is signed and you will receive the topic assignment sheet back again, which you must upload to PULS within a week. The one-week period begins when you have received the sheet from the examination board by email.

In order to ensure optimal supervision of your thesis, you are obliged to take part in internal colloquia. During these events, you will have the opportunity to present your research project/progress in the research process, receive feedback from your fellow students and ask specific questions to your supervisors. Technical and methodological input presentations by the supervisors accompany the series of events.

In case of a cancellation...

In case of a cancellation, you will have the opportunity to reapply in the next application period.

Please understand that we cannot offer a place to all applicants. If you do not agree with an allocation decision, please contact the examination board of the subject Business Administration - not the chair.
