Prof. Dr. Dieter Neher studied physics at the University of Mainz. In 1990 he gained his PhD with Prof. G. Wegner. From 1990-1992 he was a research associate at the Optical Sciences Centre, Tucson, Arizona and at the Centre for Research in Electrooptics and Lasers, Orlando, Florida with Prof. G. Stegeman. In 1992 he again joined Prof. G. Wegner at the MPI-P, heading the group "Electrooptical Phenomena in Polymers". Following his habilitation in November 1998, he became Professor of Soft Matter Physics at the Institute for Physics and Astronomy at the University of Potsdam, which is his current position.

Prof. Neher is author of ca. 250 publications in peer-reviewed journals. With nearly 50 citations per item, his H-index is current 62. In 2011, Tomson Reuters ranked him among the 100 top materials scientists for achieving highest citation impact scores for his papers. He has also authored several review articles and book chapters. He has delivered more than 130 invited talks at conferences, institute seminars and colloquia, and he is highly active in teaching courses in basic and advanced physics at the Bachelor and Master level.

Prof. Neher is spokesman and member of various academic boards and institutions. Among others, he has been appointed as spokesman of the division "Chemical Physics and Polymer Physics" of the German Physical Society, he currently heads the faculty board of the Faculty of Sciences of Potsdam University, is the Spokesman of the UP-HZB Graduate School "Perovskites - Basic Research for High Efficiency Solar Cells (HyPerCells)" and is a member of the executive board of the Berlin-Brandenburgischer Verband für Polymerforschung and of the joint commission of the Berlin-Potsdam Master of Polymer Science program.
