Conflict is a Messenger: AKS Leadership Conference 2025 in Oldenburg
Why collaboration among university language center leaders matters more than ever:
In November 2025, the annual leadership conference of the Working Group of University Language Centers, AKS, took place — hosted by the Language Center of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. For David Prickett, the event was a highlight. As leaders in higher education face an expanding range of challenges — from digitalization and internationalization to increasing diversity among students — it became clear why networks like AKS are indispensable.
Particularly enriching was the interactive workshop on “Conflicts and Conflict Conversations,” led by Jutta Kersting. Unlike typical role plays, this workshop offered real impulses, practical discussions, and hands-on advice — giving all participants valuable insights into conflict dynamics and how to navigate them constructively.
Beyond that, the conference provided space for collegial exchange: participants reflected together on current challenges, shared experiences and discussed possible solutions — from course offerings and exams to language support and international cooperation. For David Prickett, this underscored how important continuous exchange and networking among language centers is — especially to respond strategically and appropriately to the evolving landscape of higher education.
AKS deserves particular appreciation: Through events like this, the association creates crucial inspiational spaces, increases the visibility of language centers, and fosters sustainable cooperation between universities.
