Sönke H. Matthewes works as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Chair of Economic Policy, University of Potsdam. Before joining Potsdam in September 2021, he was employed at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB). He expects to defend his PhD dissertation at Freie Universität Berlin in early 2022. He is affiliated with the Skill Formation and Labor Markets Unit at the WZB, as well as the Center for Vocational Education Research (CVER) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin).
Mr Matthewes’ research interests lie in the fields of economics of education, labor economics, and applied econometrics. His work on the consequences of early tracking within the German school system was published in the Economic Journal and was awarded the NEPS publication prize in 2021. Currently, Mr. Matthewes is conducting research on local school supply in Germany and labor market returns to vocational education in England.
