Dr. Sönke H. Matthewes

Dr. Sönke H. Matthewes works as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Chair of Economic Policy, University of Potsdam. He received his Ph.D. from Freie Universität Berlin in 2022 for his dissertation titled “Consequences of Institutional Differentiation in Secondary School Systems: Three Empirical Essays in the Economics of Education”. Before joining the University of Potsdam, he worked as a doctoral researcher at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB). He is still affiliated with the Skill Formation and Labor Markets Unit at the WZB, as well as with the Center for Vocational Education Research (CVER) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

 

Sönke Matthewes’ research interests lie in the fields of economics of education, labor economics, and applied econometrics. His work on the consequences of early educational tracking in Germany was published in the Economic Journal and has been awarded with the NEPS publication prize in 2021. Currently, Mr. Matthewes is conducting research on local school supply in Germany and labor market returns to vocational education in England.
