Admission process

All applications must be submitted via the PULS application portal of the university. !! Note that formerly, applications were processed by uni-assist e.V. – this is no longer the case for students planning to begin their studies in 2026 or later !! The PULS online portal opens on April 1 for applications for the winter semester, and on November 1 for the summer semester.

If you have not received your BA from the University of Potsdam, you need to first self-register for a PULS account here. Once you have put in your application, your materials will be reviewed by the university’s PULS team. If they are formally correct and complete, they will be forwarded to the Anglophone Modernities Examining Board, which will review your materials again for your academic fit (relevant BA subject, 40 ECTS in literary and/or cultural studies).

Note that if you apply while already being enrolled in, or having completed another related MA programme, you need to submit a 'letter of placement' for the first semester. Turn to the MA Examining Board in this case.  If you wish to apply for a higher semester than the first, we recommend contacting the Examining Board first. Applications for higher semesters also need to be submitted via the PULS application portal.

Please also note that students who received their BA from a university outside of the EU will need to submit a VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) with their application – this is a certified documentation that their degree is equivalent to a EU degree that also translates your GPA. These you still need to obtain from uni-assist e.V. Unfortunately, the costs for this certification (EUR 75 for the first, EUR 35 for further MA programmes) must be covered by the applicant.

The PULS team of Potsdam University will send out notifications, usually a few weeks after the application deadlines. Prospective international students are encouraged to submit their applications well before the application deadline to allow enough time for visa applications and travel arrangements.

Admissions cannot be deferred to later semesters. Students wishing to commence their studies at a later date than initially applied for must re-apply through PULS. However, in cases where visa delays are unavoidable, we seek solutions for limited remote participation in the first semester of study.

Important information for students who are applying based on a university degree received from a university accredited in India:

In case of acceptance into the program: enrolment and organizing your stay in Germany

If you have successfully applied via PULS and have received a note of admission to our program, as well as a confirmation of timely acceptance, you need to enrol on the university’s enrolment portal. This process requires a number of documents and certificates, so you should not leave it to the last minute.
