Department of Economics

The Department of Economics offers German and international students a broad and well-guided education that is characterized by close personal contact and great flexibility in combining courses. The Bachelor (BSc) in Economics introduces the foundations of economic theory. This includes micro- and macroeconomic theory and quantitative methods such as mathematics, statistics, and econometrics. Beyond, students have the opportunity to get a comprehensive overview of Public Economics, Finance, and Social Policy, Competition Theory and International Economics.

The Potsdam BSc offers students great flexibility to augment their study program with noneconomic classes from diverse fields. Examples are business administration, law, and sociology or combined programs such as economics and history, economics and philosophy or economics and languages. Also, it is possible to attain a BSc in Policy and Economics that deliberately combines economics with political science.

Beyond, the Department of Economics participates in the following study programs

The  Master of Science (MSc) in Economics deepens the knowledge acquired in a bachelor's program and offers students a profound specialization in various fields of economic methods. The peculiarity of the Potsdam MSc Economics is thereby its strong economic policy orientation and its specialization in the areas of evidence-based economic research and quantitative economic policy. The economics group has further strong expertise in Behavioral Economics, Economics of Climate Change, Urban Economics, Energy Economics, Environmental Economics, Growth and Development Economics.

Contrary to large economics faculties in other universities, Potsdam can offer students intensive support and close contact with professors. This allows to provide a research-oriented education and to actively assist students in their career development.

The Department of Economics endorses students to participate in research and therefore offers research colloquia as well as the Potsdam Research Seminar in Economics which regularly invites scientists from other research institutions to communicate their work. Beyond, the Center for Economic Policy Analysis (CEPA) allows young scientists to conduct research on current socio-economic topics in cooperation with the DIW Berlin. For any students interested in further intensifying their academic career, the Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics and Management Science (BDPEMS) provides a comprehensive range of in-depth courses for doctoral candidates, whereas the Potsdam Center for Quantitative Research (PCQR) strengthens networking within the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences by offering courses on empirical methods for faculty scientists.
