Two scientists from the University of Potsdam continue to be among the absolute top group of the most cited researchers in their field worldwide. This year's list of "Highly Cited Researchers", which is compiled by the "Web of Science Group" of US company "Clarivate Analytics", lists physicist Prof. Dr. Dieter Neher and molecular biologist Prof. Dr. Bernd Müller-Röber among the most influential scientists in their fields for the third year in a row. With Prof. Dr. Martin Herold, Prof. Dr. Johan Rockström, Prof. Dr. Elmar Kriegler, and Prof. Dr. Philipp A. Wigge, four researchers appointed by the University of Potsdam together with the Potsdam GeoForschungsZentrum (GfZ), the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), and the Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) are also among the "Highly Cited Researchers". In 2023, the annual ranking includes almost 6900 scientists from 67 countries. Germany ranks fourth in the global comparison of countries – behind the USA, China, and the UK.

Dieter Neher is Professor of Soft Matter Physics and Optoelectronics at the University of Potsdam. His scientific work focuses on researching the dynamics of charges in novel semiconductor materials with regard to optoelectronic applications. One current goal is to develop materials for efficient solar cells with very thin absorber layers. "Due to the great demand for renewable energy, more and more groups around the world are working on new materials and concepts for solar cells," says Dieter Neher. "Our aim is to shed light on the fundamental mechanisms in these materials. The results of our work are apparently being adopted and cited in a variety of ways."

Bernd Müller-Röber is Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Potsdam and head of the "Signaling Networks in Plants" research group at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology in Golm. His research focuses on plant genome research, growth processes, and gene regulation in plants. For example, he is investigating how plants react to external influences such as heat and how they can be made more stress-resistant using methods of molecular biology, an important concern in times of climate change. "Global climate change is an ever growing threat to the foundations of our food supply and a sustainable, bio-based circular economy. We are delighted that our research into improving stress tolerance in crops is being recognized internationally," says Bernd Müller-Röber.

The “Highly Cited Researcher” ranking documents the influence of scientific publications that are most frequently cited in the respective fields. It is published annually by the "Web of Science Group ” of US company "Clarivate Analytics".
