University of Potsdam Once More in Group 201–250 in THE Ranking of Best Universities Worldwide

In the current 20th edition of the renowned “Times Higher Education” (THE) ranking, the University of Potsdam was able to retain its top position from the previous year. Ranked in the 201–250 group, it occupies an excellent position in the field of 1,904 ranked universities from 108 countries worldwide. There are eight German universities in the top 100, led by the Technical University of Munich (30), the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (38), and the University of Heidelberg (47). Among the 49 German universities included in the ranking, the University of Potsdam comes in at the 22nd place.

Leading for the eighth year in a row is Oxford University (UK), followed by Stanford University (USA) and MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). Overall, US universities continue to account for the largest number of institutions in the ranking, followed by the UK. With 21 universities, Germany is once again the third most represented nation among the top 200 this year. Significant progress has been made at Chinese universities in particular, in terms of both quantity and top rankings: seven in the top 100 and two in the top 20. The THE ranking, alongside the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and the QS World University Ranking, are considered to be among the world’s most important university rankings. The THE rankings focus on five criteria: teaching, research strength (productivity and reputation), research quality (citations), knowledge transfer, and international outlook. With a ranking of 201–250, the University of Potsdam is on a par with the George Washington University (USA), Goethe University Frankfurt, as well as its partner universities Tel Aviv University (Israel) and University of São Paulo (Brazil)
“Potsdam was once again able to achieve a very good position in the THE ranking. We scored particularly well in terms of our research performance,” says President of the University, Prof. Oliver Günther, Ph.D. “Among other things, we have the high quality of our doctoral programs to thank for this and the many excellent international postdocs who conduct their research here, but also the Alexander von Humboldt Professorships, which enable us to regularly bring top researchers from abroad to Potsdam. The University of Potsdam has truly traveled a remarkable path, which also has an impact on the international scale.”
Vice President for International Affairs, Alumni, and Fundraising at the University of Potsdam, Prof. Dr. Florian J. Schweigert, also expressed his delight with the good results in the THE ranking: “This is a wonderful sign of recognition on the international stage. International networking plays an integral part in contributing to our research strength. That is why we have to continue our efforts to further advance the university internationally in the years to come. Our European university alliance ‘European Digital UniverCity’ (EDUC) is making significant contributions in this regard.”
As recently as July, the University of Potsdam took one of the top spots in the THE U 50 ranking for universities under 50 years of age. With a total of 600 ranked universities from 104 countries, the University of Potsdam was among the top 22 worldwide and ranked 1st within Germany.  In addition, the University of Potsdam is among the top 500 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2022, also called Shanghai Ranking, and was thus able to confirm its good ranking from the previous year. The renowned ranking, which is compiled by the Jiao Tong University of Shanghai, annually compares the research strength of more than 1,800 universities in 54 subjects and publishes the 1,000 best.
