More female professors, more young female researchers: Gender equality work at the University of Potsdam is bearing fruit. This is evidenced by the success in the 2019 University Equal Opportunities Ranking, in which the Potsdam alma mater, together with the universities of Bielefeld and Jena, heads the 63 ranked universities. The ranking instrument, issued by the Center of Excellence Women and Science (CEWS), is the only one of its kind worldwide and documents the successful implementation of the equal opportunity policies of universities in a nationwide comparison. In a comparison of the federal states, Brandenburg with its universities ranks directly behind the top-ranked Berlin.
“Successful gender equality work means raising the awareness of all university members in order to work together in implementing the equal opportunity goals,” says Christina Wolff, the Central Equal Opportunities commissioner of the University of Potsdam. “The very good placement is a success for all of us!”
Since 2003, the university ranking, based on gender equality aspects, has compared the efforts of German universities to increase equal opportunity. For this purpose, the proportions of women and men in different areas are recorded: Who is getting a PhD or even a subsequent academic qualification? What are the ratios for full-time academic and artistic staff? How many female professors are there? How do these relationships change over time?
The ranking includes those universities that are members of the Association of Universities and Other Higher Education Institutions in Germany (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz - HRK) and other universities if they have at least 30 professors. The ranking provides information about 63 universities, 134 universities of applied sciences and 44 universities of the arts.
The survey is conducted by the Center of Excellence Women and Science (CEWS) which is part of the GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences and a national hub for achieving gender equality in science and research in Germany.
