The University of Potsdam and the Hasso Plattner Institute: The Digital Engineering Faculty Gets to Work

The Digital Engineering Faculty at the University of Potsdam and the Hasso Plattner Institute have held the first meeting of their new Faculty Council and elected individuals to the most important offices. Professor Christoph Meinel, the Academic Director and Managing Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Technology, was elected to be the Faculty’s first Dean. Professor Jürgen Döllner is now the Chairman of the Faculty Council and Professor Felix Naumann is the Dean of Studies.

“Together with the University of Potsdama and the state of Brandenburg, we have managed to create Germany’s first Digital Engineering Faculty. Now it’s up to us to show that this model will work,” said Professor Meinel. He expressed his thanks to the University of Potsdam and to the founding committee for their work, which made a quick start possible. The first new professors will be appointed shortly.

University President Prof. Oliver Günther: “With these new governance structures, the new faculty has all of the tools that it needs to carry out the planned expansions, both in terms of staff and content. We are extraordinarily optimistic about the upcoming appointments and research plans. With a total of 40 computer science-related professorships in all of the University of Potsdam’s six faculties, the University will be in an excellent position for teaching and researching digitalization, in all of its facets.”

The previous focus on “IT Systems Engineering” will be supplemented by additional degree programs, said Meinel. The Digital Engineering Faculty will make it possible to focus on specific areas of application for information technology that will change in particularly profound ways through the process of digitalization, for example in health sciences.

The Digital Engineering Faculty at the University of Potsdam is being financed by the Hasso Plattner Foundation. Our objective is to further develop the Hasso Plattner Institute into a university excellence center in the field of digital engineering. In the course of the expansion, four new master’s degrees will join the “IT Systems Engineering” program: Digital Health, Smart Energy, Cybersecurity and Data Engineering.
