Understanding climate change, assessing its consequences, and developing solutions—these are the core objectives of the international Master’s program "Climate, Earth, Water, Sustainability" (CLEWS), which celebrated its fifth anniversary this summer. What began in 2021 as an innovative program has quickly evolved into a flagship initiative. Heavily research-oriented and interdisciplinary in nature, the program is led by the University of Potsdam’s Institute of Environmental Science and Geography and the Institute of Physics and Astronomy. During the annual field trip to the Ötztal Alps in Austria, students investigate current climate and environmental changes firsthand. They explore the geology, glaciers, permafrost, and alpine flora and fauna, while also speaking with local experts to understand the impact of climate change on the environment, the region, and tourism.
