Awards

Klaus Sander Award

The Klaus Sander (1929-2015) award honors the Freiburg developmental biologist, who became known primarily for his studies on the processes of embryonic pattern formation. He coined the term”phylotypic stage”, a developmental stage typical of an animal phylum. With the Klaus Sander Prize, endowed with €10,000, the GfE honors the lifetime achievement of a renowned scientist.

Hilde Mangold Award

The Hilde Mangold (1898-1924) award honors the biologist and embryologist whose outstanding work in the field of developmental biology, together with her doctoral supervisor Hans Spemann, led to the discovery of the so-called Spemann organizer. For this discovery, Hans Spemann received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1935. Due to her tragic and premature death, this prize was not awarded to Hilde Mangold. The Hilde Mangold Prize, endowed with €5,000, is aimed at young researchers.
