Notes on credits
Notes on PULS
At this time, exchange students’ academic performance cannot yet be recorded in PULS.
Therefore, a certificate (Leistungsschein) must be issued by the instructor. This certificate should be issued within four weeks of the completion of the course, if possible, and sent directly to the International Office (transcript-incoming@uni-potsdam.de).
Here is a template for the certificate (PDF, 112 KB).
Notes on ECTS credits
As a general rule, when converting University of Potsdam credit points, one credit point (Leistungspunkt, LP) corresponds to one credit under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) (1 LP = 1 ECTS).
In response to numerous requests and inquiries - and particularly given that exchange students frequently ask whether they can earn more credits in a course than originally intended - here are some recommendations regarding the awarding of ECTS credits at the Department of History.
It is recommended that a written assignment be submitted for more than 4 ECTS credits. However, the final decision and responsibility for awarding ECTS credits always lies with the instructor who signs the course certificate.
The course evaluation form, on which the ECTS credits must be indicated, can be downloaded here as a PDF.
| Recommended for 3 ECTS credits: | A presentation or a comparable assignment as part of the course. |
| Recommended for 6 ECTS credits: | A presentation or equivalent assignment as part of the course, plus a written analysis of sources or an essay of 25,000 to 30,000 characters, including spaces (approximately 10 pages of continuous text), or a comparable written assignment. |
| Recommended for 9 ECTS credits: | A presentation or equivalent assignment as part of the course, plus a written paper of 37,500 to 45,000 characters, including spaces (approximately 15 pages of continuous text), or a comparable written assignment. |
| Recommended for 12 ECTS credits: | A presentation or equivalent assignment as part of the course, plus a written paper of 50,000 to 60,000 characters, including spaces (approximately 20 pages of continuous text), or a comparable written assignment. |
The character and page counts listed above are generally intended as guidelines. For ERASMUS+ students who are writing a paper in a language other than their native language, these counts may be adjusted downward. A recommended adjustment is to reduce the required character count by one-third.
If BA students participate in an MA course, instructors may, at their discretion, award more ECTS credits than originally intended. If MA students participate in a BA course, the number of ECTS credits may be reduced.
