The Theodor Fontane Archive at the University of Potsdam has received the YERUN Open Science Award, honoring the university’s achievements as one of five outstanding European Open Science initiatives. The EUR 2,000 prize provides support for university initiatives that support the scholarly community in integrating and implementing the principles of Open Science in their work.

At the award ceremony on February 14, 2023, Dr. Anna Busch, deputy director of the Theodor Fontane Archive, presented the archive’s Open Science activities and digital services: “In recent years, the Theodor Fontane Archive has pursued a long-term digital strategy for open access to cultural data and cultural heritage. We see ourselves as part of a nationally and internationally networked experimental community that is thinking together about the digital future of literary archives.”

“Our goal,” adds Prof. Dr. Peer Trilcke, director of the Theodor Fontane Archive, “is to make literary archives more open as institutions, their holdings and data more accessible, and thus research in the archive more transparent. The YERUN network of young research universities is an excellent partner for embedding this project in a vibrant European research landscape.”

Founded in 2016, the Young European Research Universities Network (YERUN) is an association of 23 European universities that want to strengthen their collaboration and jointly influence the role and character of higher education in Europe. The University of Potsdam has been a member of the YERUN network since 2022 and is involved in working groups such as the YERUN ad hoc group on Open Science and the YERUN Open Science Awards group. The University of Potsdam supports its currently ongoing Open Science strategy process with these activities.
