Successfully Defended – The University of Potsdam is again one of the world’s 250 best universities in the international THE Ranking

The University of Potsdam has once again placed very well on the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking list. The current ranking list assesses a total of 1,102 institutions around the world, and Potsdam – Brandenburg’s largest institution of higher education – was listed in the rankings from 201 to 250. In 2018, 156 more universities were ranked than in 2017, for a total of 1,258 institutions. There are eight German universities in the Top 100, led by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (32), the Technical University of Munich (44) and the University of Heidelberg (47). Among the 47 ranked German universities, Potsdam is ranked 28th.

The THE Rankings focus on five criteria: teaching, research, citations, knowledge transfer and international reputation. The University of Potsdam, ranked in the group from 201 to 250, is at the same level as the universities of Barcelona, Massachusetts and the University College Dublin. It is also ranked in the same cluster as its international strategic partner institutions – Tel Aviv University and Macquarie University.

In 2017, the University of Potsdam managed to debut at a high position in the rankings, placing among the best 250 universities around the world. “The fact that we were able to get another great ranking this year shows that our work is successful over the long term. And we managed this even though the group of academic institutions included in the THE rankings has grown significantly,” said Prof. Oliver Günther, Ph.D., president of the University.

In June 2018, the University of Potsdam took one of the top spots in the THE’s U 50 ranking for universities under 50 years of age. The University of Potsdam shot right away to the top 20 universities among 250 ranked institutions from 55 countries, and took first place in Germany ahead of the universities in Duisburg-Essen and Passau. The University of Potsdam is at 17th place internationally, which places it on par with such renowned universities as Hong Kong Polytechnic, UT Sydney and the Université Paris-Sud.
