The WZB Berlin Social Science Center-hosted project COLLISIONS (Principal Investigators: Prof Dr Anna Holzscheiter and Prof Dr Andrea Liese) is seeking to employ

one research fellow

to work 39 hours a week (full time) for three years, starting on 01 June 2017.

The project COLLISIONS (‘Responding to Norm Collisions: Procedural Norms and Interface Management in Fragmented Areas of Transnational Politics’), jointly directed by Prof Dr An-na Holzscheiter (WZB; Freie Universität Berlin) and Prof Dr Andrea Liese (University of Pots-dam), is part of the DFG Research Group ‘Overlapping Spheres of Authority and Interface Conflicts in the Global Order’ (www.osaic.eu) and, within the WZB, is connected to the Junior Research Group ‘Governance for Global Health’.

The project COLLISIONS compares the emergence of norm collisions in six areas of interna-tional cooperation: human trafficking, drug control, organ trade, protection of refugees, ge-netically modified organisms, and child labour. It investigates the conditions under which norm collisions become manifest in international politics and how different actors (state, non-state, intergovernmental) respond to such collisions.

Tasks:

− Conducting four case studies on norm collisions inside and outside of international organisations,

− Analysis of norm collisions in their respective historical context across these four is-sue areas,

− Collaboration on theory building on the identification of norm collisions and re-sponses to such collisions,

− Collaboration on the creation of a typology of responses of international organisa-tions to norm collisions,

− Preparation and conceiving of, as well as participation in, joint publications of the research group and the project,

− Involvement in the organisation and execution of joint colloquia and workshops,

− Presentation of project results in conferences and workshops.

Requirements:

− Doctoral degree in Political Science or a related field in Social Sciences (If presented with proof of interdisciplinary experience and knowledge of Political Science, partic-ularly regarding International Relations and its qualitative methods, applicants with a background of International Law will also be considered),

− Very good knowledge in the field of International Relations and international organ-isations,

− Professional expertise in at least one of the six above-listed empirical areas of re-search,

− Verifiable knowledge of qualitative methods,

− Excellent command of written and spoken English and German,

− Ability and willingness to work in a team,

− Professional experience in the field of scientific research.

Desirable qualities:

− Expertise in the fields of International Law and global norms research,

− Relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals,

− Verifiable experience in interdisciplinary work,

− Good knowledge of another official UN language spoken in the UN.

 

Salary: EG 14 on the Wage Agreement for Public Service (TVöD) scale.
