Mentoring during the Teaching Practicum Abroad (Music Education and Didactics)

This learning initiative promotes an open, constructive, and competent engagement with diversity and anti-discrimination during the teaching practicum abroad (PSA). Structures are being developed, materials compiled, and workshops offered to foster a constructive approach to diversity in school teaching.

An evaluation of the preceding project "Mentoring.International" revealed that students do not acquire knowledge-based strategies for action during their practicum semester if their mentors at German schools abroad are unfamiliar with diversity concepts and lack diversity-related competencies.

The aim is to transfer diversity frameworks into the “Teaching Practicum Abroad” phase of teacher education: for mentors, subject-specific didactics instructors as well as students abroad. The results already developed within the ZeLB working groups (e.g., the Potsdam Inclusive Didactics Model, Diversity and Anti-Discrimination, Mentor Qualification, and Standards for the PSA) will be prepared for use by mentors and practicum coordinators at the University of Potsdam and made more accessible through a digital learning platform.

As a result, both structural and practical training opportunities will be offered for integration into teacher education. This sub-project is led by the field of Music Education and designed for interdisciplinary application.
