Doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers of the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences who require financial support for an independently planned research project, optionally in collaboration with other junior researchers or junior professors (up to the time of their first evaluation). It is generally possible to reapply for future calls for proposals. Only one application per person and round is permitted.

Funding can be used flexibly, for example:

• Pilot studies to test new research approaches
• Research trips to archives, libraries, or research institutions
• Acquisition of datasets or software licenses for research purposes
• Seed funding for new experimental project ideas

Please note: Conference travel, teaching-related research projects, and publication fees are not eligible for funding.

Projects must demonstrate clear academic value. Applications should include:

• A brief description of the project (max. one page), including its academic relevance
• A rough budget outline specifying intended use of funds
• A realistic timeline for implementation (budget and timeline together max. one page)
• Please include the following in the header of your application: Name, project title, and email address.
• Information about care work: Please indicate whether you have care responsibilities (e.g., caregiving, nursing, etc.).
• Describe clearly and comprehensively why you need the funding to carry out your project.

Funding decisions are made by the Vice Dean for Research and Academic Qualification and the Officer for Doctoral and Habilitation Affairs. Representatives of the academic sections may be consulted as needed. The decentralized  Gender Equality Officer (dGBA) supports and advises the selection process.

Please note the following points:

Upon acceptance of the Explorer Grant, a confirmation of receipt must be completed. With this, you confirm:

•     that you will mention the Explorer Grant as support in all publications,
•     that you will submit a short report (150–200 words) after completion of the project,
•     and that you agree to give a short presentation of your project at the PhD and PostDoc Day.
