NamTip Winter School featured on global events list for Desertification and Drought Day 2025
The upcoming NamTip Winter School (16-21 June 2025) has been featured on the official list of global events for the Desertification and Drought Day 2025, an annual UN observance held on 17 June to raise awareness about the growing threats of land degradation and promote sustainable land stewardship worldwide.
Under the theme “Identifying, Preventing and Reversing Tipping Points in Social-Ecological Systems”, the Winter School will bring together early-career scientists from the University of Namibia (UNAM) and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). Through a combination of theoretical sessions and hands-on fieldwork—including rangeland degradation assessments, modelling, drone mapping, and excursions to NamTip’s long-term research sites—participants will explore practical strategies for sustainable rangeland management in dryland ecosystems. The course also incorporates interdisciplinary perspectives on climate adaptation, rangeland restoration, and policy analysis.
By building local scientific capacity and promoting practical solutions to land degradation, the NamTip Winter School exemplifies the goals of Desertification and Drought Day and contributes meaningfully to global efforts to combat desertification.
