University of Potsdam Still Going Strong in THE Ranking of Best Universities Worldwide

In the current edition of the renowned “Times Higher Education” (THE) ranking, the University of Potsdam was able to retain its top position from the previous year. Ranked in the 201-250 group, it occupies an excellent position in the growing field of now 2191 ranked universities from 115 countries worldwide.  There are eight German universities in the top 100, led by the Technical University of Munich (27), the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (34) and the University of Heidelberg (49). Among the 55 German institutions of higher education included in the ranking, the University of Potsdam is in 19th place.

Leading for the ninth year in a row is Oxford University (UK), followed by MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and Princeton University (USA). Overall, US and British universities continue to occupy the top ten spots in the ranking, followed by ETH Zurich in 11th place. Overall, with 18 universities in the top 200, Germany continues to hold an excellent third place behind the US and the United Kingdom.

Ranking in the 201–250 group, the University of Potsdam is on a par with the University of Chicago (USA), Goethe University Frankfurt, as well as its partner universities Tel Aviv University (Israel), University of São Paulo (Brazil), and University College Dublin (Ireland).

The President of the University of Potsdam, Prof. Oliver Günther, Ph.D., is pleased with the good results the UP was once again able to achieve: "Our ranking among the top eleven percent worldwide shows that we have established ourselves as a research university and are playing among the 'greats'. This is the result of excellent teaching, consistent research funding in all phases of academic careers, and our focus on networking – both locally and internationally."

The University of Potsdam has also performed well this year in other rankings that are widely recognized on a global scale. The university was able to maintain its ranking in the 301-400 group in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2025, also called Shanghai Ranking. In the third important ranking, the QS University Ranking, the University of Potsdam was on position 477 in a field of more than 1,500 universities.

The THE ranking, alongside the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and the QS World University Ranking, are considered to be among the world’s most important university rankings. The THE rankings focus on five criteria: teaching, research strength (productivity and reputation), research quality (citations), knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
