Potsdam Joins ELLIS, the European AI Network of Excellence

ELLIS, the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems, today announced the inclusion of Potsdam as a new region in the prestigious Artificial Intelligence (AI) Network of Excellence. The new ELLIS unit in Potsdam (ELLIS Sustainable Life Potsdam) includes the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPl), the University of Potsdam (UP), and the Center for AI in Health Research (ZKI-PH) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). The unit’s aim is to promote the development and application of AI in the fields of sustainability and health, and to further strengthen Potsdam as a location for cutting-edge AI research.

The most important challenges of our time include moving away from fossil fuels to renewable energy, storing energy and minimizing energy consumption, personalized medicine, and algorithm-driven analysis of viruses to prevent and contain endemics and pandemics. The new unit’s research agenda therefore includes activities in AI and energy, AI for medicine, genomics and infectious diseases, and efficient and scalable methods for AI algorithms.

“The ELLIS unit in Potsdam offers unique opportunities for AI research in the region. It will help develop scalable, causal and explainable AI methods that bridge the scientific fields of medicine, chemistry, physics and computer science and address new challenges in healthcare and energy management,” says Professor Ralf Herbrich, co-director of the ELLIS unit in Potsdam as well as head of the Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability Department and managing director of the Hasso Plattner Institute.

Brief Profile of ELLIS
ELLIS is a pan-European AI network of excellence. It relies on machine learning as the driving force for modern AI and aims to ensure the lasting international leadership of AI made in Europe by bringing together top researchers in the field and creating a multi-center AI research laboratory. Since its inception in 2018, ELLIS has evolved into a network with 39 ELLIS units at world-class institutions in 14 countries, 14 ELLIS programs, and a pan-European PhD program. ELLIS members aim to shape the future of AI in Europe by pushing the scientific and technological boundaries for human-centered, useful, and safe AI.
