Graduates of our international master's degree program CLEWS will be trained to become experts in the field of climate science research in order to address the consequences of global warming in a science-based manner with regard to research, politics, and the public.

The University of Potsdam offers for the first time this fall an interdisciplinary master's program that will directly address the most pressing issues related to the climate and earth system, the water cycle and sustainability. The English-language program "Climate, Earth, Water, Sustainability," or CLEWS for short, is led by the Institute of Environmental Science and Geography and the Institute of Physics and Astronomy. It cooperates with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). "Together, we are training the urgently needed experts for climate and environmental protection," says Prof. Dr. Andreas Musil, Vice President for Teaching and Studies at the University of Potsdam. "Graduates will be in demand around the world and in a wide range of careers to address the consequences of global warming address the consequences of global warming in a science-based manner." Interested students can apply by August 15.

The master's program focuses on quantitative environmental research, physics, climate and hydroscience. In addition, it covers important aspects of risk analysis, environmental economics, communication, and energy policy. Methodologically, the focus is on methods of data analysis, numerical modeling, and data acquisition using remote sensing.

“The University of Potsdam, with its partners from PIK, AWI and UFZ, brings together world-leading scientists on the topics of CLEWS. We offer an excellent international degree program that deals with pressing challenges of humanity” says Prof. Dr. Axel Bronstert from the Institute of Environmental Science and Geography. “The new master's program, intended for international students, will enormously enhance the transdisciplinary aspects in the curriculum. Thus, it will train a new generation of students able to implement a broad range of interdisciplinary approaches to the highly relevant problems of climate and environmental impact”, emphasizes Prof. Dr. Arkady Pikovsky from the Institute of Physics and Astronomy.

The CLEWS program will be taught in English. Interested students can apply for the coming winter semester by August 15th.
