Study plan

The curriculum is subdivided into individual modules, which are in turn composed of individual courses (lectures, seminars, and practical courses). During the first two semesters, among other things, we aim to approximate the level of knowledge of all students in the two main topics of biochemistry and molecular biology. We also value highly a solid deepening of existing knowledge in the area of practical bioinformatics, where profound methodological competence will be essential for all fields of activity of our graduates.

Based on two compulsory core modules 1 and 2 (see below), we offer a broad range of orientation modules, and elective modules, which can be assembled according to individual interests. In doing so, we increasingly rely on intellectual freedom and individual self-responsibility in the compilation of the modules and the specialization each student strives to achieve.

The current list of modules and courses is described in the module manual.

The master program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology consists of the following modules:

  • Core module 1 (6 Credit Points = CP): State of the Art in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology offered only in winter term and
Core module 2 (6 CP): Practical bioinformatics offered only in summer term
  • 3 orientation modules (11 CP)
  • 40 CP worth of elective modules A (8 CP) and B (6 CP)
  • 4 weeks advanced research practical in preparation for the Master thesis (5 CP)
  • Master thesis (30 CP). Topics for master theses are closely intertwined with current research  (see working groups).

You need to register exactly 40 CP with PULS for the elective modules. You will be unable to finish your studies if you register 42 CP. So, please plan your course of study accordingly!

Lab courses and practical courses can be done at extra-university institutes or companies. You need to find a lecturer at the UP, whose focus reasonably fits with the courses taken outside UP and discuss recognition of the external work before starting it. Courses taken at extra-university institutes or companies can be recognized under the module “BIO-B-RM22 Current Research in biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Local research Institutes and Biotechnology Companies” (11 CP) and “BIO-B-WM13 Current Research in biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Local research Institutes and Biotechnology Companies B” (6 CP).

14 CP can be taken outside your subject area at other institutes of the UP. This has to be clarified with the head of the examination board before taking the course. If you want to take courses at other institutes here at the UP, you need to accredit them under one of the following modules: BIO-B-WM14 to BIO-B-WM17 “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as Reflected in other Sciences A and B” and “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Practice A and B”.

In total, the Master program comprises 2 years and 120 CP.
