Dear Professors, colleagues and students, As a part of the scientific and academic community in Germany, we would like to turn your attention to the human tragedy that is happening in Iran. In the past three months, people in Iran have been demonstrating against the totalitarian and brutal Mulla’s regime. This round of protests started on September 16th 2022, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa (Jina) Amini in the so?called morality police custody in Tehran. She was detained just because of not wearing the headscarf properly. Since then, people with different beliefs and religions have been coming to the streets and chanting Women-Life-Freedom.
From the beginning of the protests until the time of writing this email, 448 people including 63 minors have been beaten or shot to death by the Islamic Republic regime in Iran and more than 14,000 people have been jailed. Moreover, the security forces have also imposed brutal crackdowns on universities, including the prestigious Sharif University in Tehran, on October 2nd 2020. A large number of students have been sentenced to jail or deprived of their education on the crime of participating in the aforementioned protests.
We would like to notify you that on November 24th 2022, UN HRC passed a landmark resolution to establish a fact-finding mission to investigate human rights violations in Iran related to the current protests, especially with respect to women and children. This Commissioner also highlighted how the security forces, “notably the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have used live ammunition, birdshot and other metal pellets, teargas and batons” against the protest movement as it has spread to a reported 150 cities and 140 universities in all provinces of Iran.
In order to support protesters in Iran and to make their voice heard, scholars and students at more than 100 universities and academic institutes around the world, calls to rally for a free Iran. We kindly ask you to stand with us and be our voice by expressing your support for people in Iran and also to help us with sharing this message with your friends, colleagues and other academic centers.
