Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), also known as virtual mobility/exchange, is an emerging pedagogical innovation which utilizes technology to embed meaningful first-person international interactions into classrooms. COIL-enhanced courses feature 4-12 week modules co-taught with a professor abroad in which students collaborate with international peers in disciplinary-specific and/or multidisciplinary shared lectures, assignments and projects that can also expand their global perspectives and cross-cultural competencies.
These workshops will provide attendees with an overview of this innovative approach to interna-tionalized teaching and learning, as well as examine case studies of successful collaborations from a variety of disciplinary contexts, including presentations of projects at the University of Potsdam. We will learn about ways to find an international partner, such as by expanding re-search activities into the teaching arena. We will also discuss approaches for exhibiting sensitivi-ty to cultural differences during the development and teaching of COIL courses. Attendees will also engage in activities to begin to conceptualize ways to embed COIL strategies into the courses of participating professors. To help bring those early ideas into reality, we will present resources available at the University of Potsdam and from the growing global COIL community to support further COIL course development.

John has 15+ years of wide-ranging experience working in American, British and German higher education. His career focuses on the intersection of pedagogy, academic technology, and international education. This includes leading workshops and providing guidance in creation of support and professional development programs for professors bringing pedagogical innovations to their classrooms, and well as in institutional strategy for technology-driven internationalization.
John holds a European Master in Higher Education, with a minor in Intercultural Communications, through an Erasmus Mundus joint degree at the Universities of Oslo, Tampere and Aveiro. John has spent 5 years traveling and living abroad in 50+ countries.
