The choice of a foreign language profile

Project title: The choice of a foreign language profile: A form of horizontal differentiation in the education system?

Project duration: 2016-2018

Project leader: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Gerhards, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Kohler

Short Description

Although Latin and ancient Greek are no longer spoken and thus, have no immediate benefit for the communcation between people, in Germany the proportion of pupils who decide to acquire these languages has risen over time. In our research project, we explore the question why students or their parents decide to acquire languages with no communicative value (Latin, Greek) even though in a globalized society, it would be economically rational to learn modern languages (Spanish, French).
