Digital Engineering Faculty continues its growth trajectory – Prof. Dr. med. Georg Kaissis appointed to a professorship in Digital Health

The Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) continues to grow: On November 1, Prof. Georg Kaissis took up his professorship in Digital Health: Human-Centred Transformative AI at HPI. With this appointment, the joint Digital Engineering Faculty of the HPI and the Uni Potsdam is strengthening its scientific expertise in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. Prof. Kaissis' research focuses on the development of next-generation multimodal AI models that can integrate and interpret different types of medical data, from clinical findings and imaging to genomics and population health data. The goal is to create trustworthy, secure, and fair systems that accelerate diagnostic processes, enable personalized therapies, and improve the analysis of comprehensive health information.

„We are at a pivotal moment where transformative AI can redefine healthcare. My vision for this chair is to build AI systems that are not only technically powerful but fundamentally trustworthy and human-centred, acting as reliable partners for doctors and scientists to solve some of the most pressing challenges in medicine. HPI, with its focus on innovation and real-world impact, provides the perfect environment to turn this vision into reality, and I am incredibly excited to join this vibrant community,“ explains Prof. Kaissis.

At HPI, Prof. Kaissis and his team will work on developing AI systems that reliably support medical decisions. This includes methods for protecting sensitive health data, approaches to ensuring fair and transparent AI decisions, AI reasoning and efficient human-in-the-loop systems—AI systems that provide intelligent suggestions while doctors and researchers make the final decisions.

Prof. Georg Kaissis studied medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. After completing his specialist training in radiology, he gained extensive expertise in medical imaging, machine learning, and trustworthy AI in senior research positions at the Technical University of Munich, Helmholtz Munich, and Imperial College London. Most recently, he was a senior researcher at Google DeepMind in London.

With the appointment of Prof. Kaissis, the HPI now has 30 professorships. Further appointments are already planned, allowing the institute to continue its growth trajectory.
