Zoom-Workshop mit Dr. Svitlana Pidoprygora "Solidarity with Ukraine in International Comics: The Case of Poland"
The workshop will be structured in three parts:
The first part provides an overview of how, since the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, international comic projects have expressed solidarity with Ukraine in both documentary and fictional forms. In this section, several examples of such projects will be briefly introduced.
The second part focuses specifically on comics created in Poland in support of Ukraine. The workshop will examine two examples that represent different contexts of solidarity. The first is Ryszard Dąbrowski’s Likwidator znów w Ukrainie (2023), published in Polish as an individual artistic initiative. The second is the special issue Paneuropa. Solidarity with Ukraine (2023), published in English, Polish, and Ukrainian. Paneuropa. Solidarity with Ukraine is the fifth comic in the Paneuropa series published by the Representation of the European Commission in Poland as part of its cultural and educational initiatives.
In the final part, participants will work directly with selected comics and practice several elements of visual and narrative analysis. Students will analyse selected panels and short excerpts, focusing on visual storytelling, symbolism, and narrative strategies used to communicate solidarity with Ukraine.
