Welcome!
In the Heisenberg group “Spectroscopy & Biocatalysis” we are working on the elucidation of the reaction mechanisms of exciting metalloenzymes that produce hydrogen, split nitrogen and catalyze the reduction of oxygen or carbon dioxide.
This form of bioenergetics plays an important role in anaerobic metabolic processes of bacteria and archaea and in plant photosynthesis.
We work at the interface of physical chemistry, biochemistry, and inorganic chemistry. This research can best be described as molecular biophysics.
Methodologically, we concentrate on infrared spectroscopy and electrochemistry. Our conceptual focus is proton transfer, biological redox chemistry and the influence of the protein environment on biocatalysis.
