In the Heisenberg group “Spectroscopy & Biocatalysis” (est. 2025) we are working on the elucidation of the reaction mechanisms of metalloenzymes that engage in small molecule activation including H2 production, N2 splitting and O2 or CO2 reduction. Common denominator in this set of diverse reactions is the involvement of both electrons and protons (PCET). 

Enyzmatic gas conversion is a form of bioenergetics plays an important role across all biology, e.g., in anaerobic metabolic processes of bacteria and archaea and in plant photosynthesis. Often, this includes an asymmetrical distribution of reducing potentials (electron bifurcation).

We work at the interface of physical chemistry, biochemistry, and inorganic chemistry. This research can best be described as molecular biophysics and biophysical chemistry.

Methodologically, we focus on the development and application of time-dependent infrared difference spectroscopy and protein film electrochemistry.
