Role of the Knowledgeable Other

With the help of the knowledgeable other, the team members are guided through the process and can concentrate entirely on the content aspects of the process.

Possible roles and tasks of the knowledgeable other:

Coach

Helps to develop subject-specific skills and routines.

Mentor

Gives advice from within and focuses on interdisciplinary and professional counselling.

Moderator

Moderates the individual phases of a Lesson Study process and is responsible for the organisational aspects.

Counsellor

Provides expertise and solutions to individual problems.

Who can become a knowledgeable other?

  • University researchers engaged in Lesson Study
  • School counsellors
  • Others concerned with school development
  • Teachers from existing Lesson Study processes from the teaching staff or other schools

Knowledgeable others are not mandatory.
