Nebolus is a digital application that enables health professionals to organise health-related scavenger hunts on various health topics and in different settings. The goal is to promote navigational health literacy among people of different ages and to reduce their barriers to health service utilization. Secondarily, Nebolus aims to strengthen collaboration among local stakeholders through developing a coordinated and individual-centered approach to health promotion and prevention.
Using a browser-based planning tool, scavenger hunts can be individually designed and adapted to local and target group-specific needs. Local institutions that offer services related to a respective health topic communicate their services in a low-threshold manner during a scavenger hunt. Using the Nebolus smartphone app, participants can download and take part in the scavenger hunt. During a scavenger hunt they learn about participating institutions and their services in a playful way, and each riddle solved will lead to another institution (entertainment education approach).
Nebolus is used in various settings across Germany. The planning tool is available in German and English, and the Nebolus app (available for download in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store) is available in German, English, and Turkish. The Nebolus app has a low-barrier mode and is suitable for use by people with impairments.
Nebolus is accompanied by evaluation studies that examine the effects of the intervention on participants (effectiveness studies) and the resources and challenges of implementation for professionals (implementation studies).
