AstroOnTap Potsdam: Talk "No Gods Required: Creating a Universe from Scratch"

Source: Schaye et al. (2026)

In the 1970s, simulating the formation of the universe was considered wildly impractical. Today, thanks to advances in high-performance computing and clever algorithms, cosmological simulations can run on machines as ordinary as a laptop. Starting from a nearly uniform universe and a handful of physical laws, these simulations grow galaxies, clusters, and the vast cosmic web that fills the cosmos. In this talk, we'll explore how these virtual universes are created, why they have become surprisingly affordable to compute, and what they have taught us about dark matter, cosmic structure formation, and our current picture of the universe.

Come by and get to know current research by our Potsdam astrophysicists at the AstroOnTap Potsdam event series, and put your astronomical trivia knowledge to the test in the pub quiz. Maybe your team will even win the highly desired trophy?

Both the talk and pub quiz will be held in English.
